Artificial Intelligence and Screen Limits in New York City Schools

As New York City schools reopen next week, a new policy is being implemented that introduces a one-year pause on the use of artificial intelligence until students reach the high school level.

AI and Screen Restrictions

A one-year pause on students using artificial intelligence is planned in New York City public schools until the high school level. This policy covers approximately 600,000 young students.

Under the new rules, students from kindergarten through second grade will not be permitted to use devices such as laptops and tablets in the classroom.

Rules by Grade Levels

For students in third through eighth grades, laptops used during classes will be subject to time limits.

Department of Education leaders had been working on this guidance for months, taking into account feedback from lawmakers, technology companies, and parents.

Flexibility for Teachers

Teachers in the city will not be subject to the same restrictions and will be able to utilize artificial intelligence for purposes such as preparing lesson plans.

However, it was clarified that teachers will not be allowed to use these tools in areas such as grading or crisis management.
