Artificial Intelligence Banned on Student Devices in Los Angeles School District

Los Angeles Unified School District board leaders clarified during a committee meeting on Wednesday that access to generative AI is blocked for students using school-provided devices.

Parents and board members gathered on Wednesday to discuss concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence in classrooms. This session was recorded as the first of five meetings addressing issues related to the tool, which is being debated nationwide.

LAUSD President Kelly Gonez stated during the meeting that no students currently have access to generative AI and that this is an important topic.

Details of the Ban and Restrictions

This temporary ban on the tool remains in effect, and the situation was clarified during Wednesday's meeting. LAUSD Board Member Nick Melvoin expressed that he felt this situation was not adequately publicized and encouraged better communication.

Prior to the implementation of the new screen time policy, students aged 13 and older could access generative AI after completing a course on the rules. However, following the new policy, these tools were blocked for all students on district devices.

Future Period Policies

The LAUSD announced that the first meeting of the Generative AI Ad Hoc Committee was organized to develop safety measures and procedures for student use of these tools. Policy recommendations are planned to be presented to the Board of Education at the end of the school year.

Board members specifically emphasized that the current ban applies only to district-provided devices and does not cover personal devices.
