Artificial Intelligence Data Centers and Task Force Debate in Philadelphia
While artificial intelligence data center projects are protested in Philadelphia, Mayor Parker has established a new task force to examine the issue.
Demands for the construction of artificial intelligence data centers and their potential environmental impacts have pitted the city administration and local residents against each other.
Protests in Front of City Hall
The No Data Centers in Philly coalition staged a demonstration in front of City Hall demanding a three-year moratorium on data center construction in the city. At the protest, attended by about one hundred demonstrators, potential risks to energy grids and water resources were voiced.
Mayor Parker's Move
Although Mayor Cherelle Parker did not directly accept the moratorium demand, she signed an executive order establishing the Philadelphia Data Center Task Force to examine the impacts of hyperscale data centers. The task force is expected to submit a report by June 2027.
Potential Locations and City Council
In the city, which currently does not have large-scale data centers, city-owned land next to the Northeast Philadelphia Airport and the former PES refinery site are being evaluated as two potential areas. The council president and members have not yet made a clear commitment regarding the moratorium.
