A $14.2 million artificial intelligence project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and spearheaded by Brookhaven National Laboratory has been announced.
Purpose and Scope of the Project
Brookhaven National Laboratory will lead a three-year national project utilizing complex artificial intelligence systems to model sudden challenges and long-term planning needs faced by electrical grids.
Funding and Institutional Partnerships
The $14.2 million budget project will bring together the resources of research institutes such as Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University, alongside private sector and public entities including IBM Research, LIPA, and Con Edison.
GridFN Model and Scenarios
Developed under the Genesis Mission, the AI-based grid foundational model called GridFN will enable the rapid simulation of billions of scenarios and the optimal management of new electricity demands.
Time Savings and Cybersecurity
While projection studies that can take months with standard models are targeted to be completed within 24 hours, the platform will play a critical role in cybersecurity processes as well as daily operations.
