French artificial intelligence startup Mistral has introduced its new AI model, Mistral Large 4, after a five-month hiatus. Company executives stated that this new model, also known as Le Chonk, surpasses Chinese and other open-weight competitors in certain areas such as cybersecurity.

Announcement of the New Model

French artificial intelligence company Mistral has publicly introduced its new AI model after a hiatus of approximately five months. With a three-year history and regarded as Europe's strongest AI player, the company had released its last model in May.

Comparison with Chinese Competitors

Mistral CEO Artur Mensch stated during the launch event in Abu Dhabi that the announced model ranks above Chinese models in certain areas, including cybersecurity. Mensch emphasized that the narrative claiming Europe cannot compete does not reflect reality.

Release Date

Mistral Large 4, or Le Chonk by its unofficial name, will be released publicly on October 27. Prior to this date, cybersecurity experts and government officials will have access to a version with fewer safety restrictions to test the model's capabilities.

Open-Weight Systems

Pierre Stock, Mistral's vice president of science, stated that the model ranks among the most powerful open-weight systems available. Open-weight models allow users to download the system from platforms and run it on their own hardware.

Future Goals and Hardware

Mistral stated that the Large 4 model has closed the gap with frontier models in areas such as coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing, and product design. The company aims to build deep partnerships across the value chain with backers such as ASML and Samsung.
