Google is launching an experimental initiative called Project Suncatcher to test the performance of artificial intelligence processors in space.
Launch with Falcon 9 Rocket
Equipped with Tensor Processing Units, the satellite will be launched on October 1 by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to utilize solar energy in low Earth orbit.
Testing Space Conditions
The primary goal of the mission is to measure how well the chips can withstand the physical stress of spaceflight, radiation, and temperature changes.
Although preliminary tests showed that the chips can withstand high G-force and radiation, it is stated that certain elements can only be tested directly in space.
Future Plans and Cooling Systems
This mission is a step toward the idea of in-orbit satellite constellations previously put forward by Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
While two more satellites are planned to be launched into orbit next year, a cooling system containing heat pipes and radiators will also be tested for the chips in orbit.
