Action camera manufacturer GoPro has announced that it has signed a definitive merger agreement with Starman Optical, a private photonics company, to step into the AI data center and defense sectors.

GoPro is joining the artificial intelligence boom by deciding to merge with Starman Optical, with this move aiming to expand into the data center and defense markets.
Company CEO Nicholas Woodman stated that this merger will drive growth in consumer, commercial, and defense markets.
Sharp Increase in Shares
Following the merger news, the company's shares gained 40% in value and closed on the rise.
It was announced that the shares will continue to trade on the Nasdaq stock exchange and shareholders will receive a cash payment of $1.14 per share.
Partnerships and Debt Payoff
It was noted that YouTuber Markiplier holds a large stake of 8.5%, while BlackRock reported a 6.4% stake in the summer.
Among the announcements was that the company's $92 million debt will be paid off entirely upon the close of the deal.
Current Products and Future Plans
GoPro announced that it will continue to support its existing consumer products, subscription, and cloud platform.
The company also stated that it will make growth investments to pursue a broader and more diversified product roadmap.
