New Labor Protection Laws in California Against AI Threats
California Governor Gavin Newsom has approved new laws prohibiting the sole use of artificial intelligence in layoffs to protect workers from the negative impacts of AI.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed comprehensive new laws against the threats of artificial intelligence in working life. The regulations ban relying solely on AI in layoffs, prevent the collection of neural data, and require companies to provide notification in AI-driven layoffs.
New Legal Steps Against Artificial Intelligence
In the state of California, an important legal regulation has been implemented to prevent the negative impacts of artificial intelligence on workers. At a time when federal-level artificial intelligence regulations are lagging behind, the California administration has taken the initiative.
AI Ban in Layoffs
According to the new package of laws signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, bosses are prohibited from relying solely on artificial intelligence when making a decision to lay off a worker. Additionally, companies will be required to inform employees if layoffs occur due to artificial intelligence.
Neural Data and Surveillance Restrictions
The new regulations prohibit the use of artificial intelligence in workplaces to predict employees' emotional states or the collection of neural data obtained from the electrical signals of the brain and nerves. Furthermore, artificial intelligence surveillance in workplace restrooms has been completely banned.
Assessments by Unions and Experts
Unions, worker advocates, and some lawmakers supported the introduction of new rules against this technology, which has developed unchecked until now. Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor, described this situation as a turning point.
Experts, on the other hand, point out that the new laws lack a specific enforcement mechanism, meaning workers cannot file lawsuits directly and the regulations can only be enforced by the state.
