OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Evaluates Possibility of Slowing Down AI Development
Amid growing safety concerns, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced they are considering slowing down groundbreaking artificial intelligence work, with the participation of other labs.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, during a meeting with internal employees, raised the possibility of slowing down artificial intelligence development, stating he hopes this pause decision will also be adopted by other artificial intelligence laboratories across the industry.
Meeting with Employees
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman brought up the possibility of slowing down the development process of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence models during a company-wide meeting.
According to reports, Altman stated that other artificial intelligence laboratories in the industry could join this slowdown movement, though some institutions might choose not to take this step.
Security Measures and the Astra Model
OpenAI had previously announced in a statement on September 1 that it postponed the development and release schedule of the Astra model to increase security measures against cyber misuse.
The company stated that it made this decision after determining through tests that the model met the critical cybersecurity threshold.
Other Approaches in the Industry
In a statement made by Anthropic in June, it was suggested that pioneering artificial intelligence developers should slow down or halt their work to allow societal structures time to catch up.
On the other hand, a manifesto signed by 1,386 employees of pioneering artificial intelligence companies called on the U.S. government to support international efforts to deliberately balance autonomous artificial intelligence development.
