Meeting in South Dakota

U.S. Senator Mike Rounds participated in a closed-door session held at South Dakota Mines alongside Anthropic executives Anthony Cimino and Dylan Shields. Students, academics, and alumni came together at the lunch gathering in the Surbeck Center Beck Ballroom.

Impact Areas of Artificial Intelligence

During the Q&A session, the potential impacts of artificial intelligence integration on the environment, healthcare, education, the workforce, the global economy, and national security were discussed in depth.

Personal Health Experiences

Rounds, co-chair of the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus, stated that his interest in AI-powered healthcare technologies is personal. He expressed that he personally experienced the life-saving impact of new technologies during his late wife Jean's battle with cancer.

Emphasis on Global Competition

Rounds stated that the U.S. slowing down its artificial intelligence research would provide an advantage to competitors. Emphasizing that China is advancing rapidly in every field, including space and cyberspace, he noted that research cannot be halted.

Intellectual Property Rights

Stating that Congress must protect intellectual property for artists, researchers, and content creators regarding generative artificial intelligence, Rounds noted that this is a significant advantage against China.
