OpenAI formally announced the launch of a new independent advisory group hosted by the Institute for Advanced Study located in Princeton, New Jersey.
Aimed at giving mathematicians a greater voice in the company's math-focused research, this body is named the Mathematics and AI Advisory Group.
Resolution of Over a Hundred Open Problems
The announcement of the new group was shared with the public immediately following the sudden publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem.
The company claims that the same internal model has resolved over one hundred additional open problems across nearly all subfields of mathematics.
Mathematicians' Reactions and Open Letter
Many prominent mathematicians have openly expressed unease regarding the pace of these results produced by artificial intelligence.
Earlier this month, twenty-five Fields Medalist mathematicians signed an open letter stating that AI labs are threatening their intellectual work in a race to solve famous mathematical problems.
Powers and Role of the Advisory Group
The advisory group will primarily be responsible for evaluating the significance of new results and coordinating the process of sharing these findings with the public.
Although members will not receive compensation, they will be able to offer unsolicited advice, make their views public, and control their own membership.
Limit on Interfering with Research Pace
The group will strictly lack the authority or capability to slow down or alter the direction of OpenAI's ongoing mathematical research.
In a press release, the Institute for Advanced Study also emphasized that it holds no decision-making authority within any artificial intelligence company.
Initial Membership Roster
Nine prominent mathematicians have initially joined the newly established advisory group as members.
As a notable detail, only one of these members, Camillo De Lellis from the Institute for Advanced Study, is among the signatories of the Fields Medalists' letter.
