Springer Nature Announces New Framework for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Research Processes
Springer Nature has published a new framework aimed at evaluating the responsible use of AI tools for researchers, reviewers, and editors.
Springer Nature has announced that it has updated its editorial policies to evaluate when and how AI tools can be used responsibly in research and publishing processes.
Updates to AI Policy
Springer Nature announced its new policies in response to the demand for clear guidance as AI increasingly takes part in research and publishing workflows. More than 70 percent of researchers consider publisher guidance to be important.
Risk Assessment and Human Oversight
The new framework aims to examine how AI is used, its potential impact, risk level, and whether appropriate human oversight is ensured. Low-risk processes and uses that could influence decisions are kept distinct.
Prohibited Uses and Responsibility
Artificial intelligence cannot replace responsible human judgment and must not compromise the integrity of the publishing process. The use of AI is prohibited when generating research results or delegating peer review.
Assessments by Executives
Springer Nature Chief Publishing Officer Harsh Jegadeesan and Head of Journal Policy Ellie Gendle stated that human responsibility is fundamental and that AI can accelerate discoveries when used correctly.
