Federal fire agencies and researchers in the U.S. have begun actively using unmanned aerial vehicles to enhance firefighter safety in challenging terrains and increase operational efficiency.

Drones Deployed in Challenging Terrains

In challenging and high-risk areas like the Sand Creek Fire in Montana, unmanned aerial vehicles are utilized to ensure the safety of crews. Drones play a critical role in monitoring hazardous terrains.

Meredith Hollowell, a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Forest Service, stated that drones provide real-time infrared imagery, helping personnel make safer decisions.

Aerial Ignition and Logistics Support

Federal agencies are also using unmanned aerial vehicles for aerial ignition operations to reduce exposure for pilots and firefighters.

The Forest Service is testing unmanned ground vehicles capable of transporting heavy loads such as hoses, tools, water, and medical supplies in rugged terrain, as seen in tests in Georgia.

Artificial Intelligence and Future Vision

Researchers are working to integrate data obtained from unmanned aerial vehicles with artificial intelligence. Phinehas Lampman from the University of Idaho published research analyzing fire behavior using thermal infrared imagery and machine learning models.

Although current artificial intelligence applications are largely in a proof-of-concept stage, officials expect these technologies to radically transform wildfire detection and suppression efficiency in the future.
