Turkey Health Research: Perception Improves, Habits Decline

A new health literacy study revealed that while the rate of society feeling healthy has increased, negative habits and chronic diseases have also risen.

The 3rd Health Literacy Research, conducted in cooperation with Siemens Healthineers Turkey and FutureBright Group, revealed that while the rate of individuals feeling healthy in Turkey has increased, risk factors such as lack of exercise, smoking, and chronic illnesses are also on the rise.

Health Perception and Lifestyle Habits

According to the research conducted in April and May, the rate of those who feel healthy rose to 76 percent. On the other hand, the rate of those stating they never exercise rose to 39 percent, while smoking continued at a rate of 46.5 percent.

Chronic Diseases and Stress

While nearly half of the participants described themselves as stressed, the rate of those stating they have a chronic illness reached 23 percent. The prevalence of high blood pressure rose to 10.3 percent, and diabetes to 8 percent.

Doctor Visits and Check-up Habits

While 52.7 percent of the society stated they only consult a doctor when a complaint arises, the rate of those going to a healthcare institution for routine check-ups remained at 23.5 percent. The rate of those having regular check-ups rose to 35 percent.

Lack of Knowledge Regarding Symptoms

According to the research results, 66 percent of the participants stated they do not know the symptoms of a stroke, and 45 percent were unaware that Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed early.

Increase in Mammograms in Women's Health

The rate of having a mammogram among women over the age of thirty increased to 54 percent in two years. Seventy percent of women stated they know the self-breast examination method, and 80 percent of this group stated they apply the method.

Artificial Intelligence Usage and Contradictions

Forty percent of the participants stated that they had artificial intelligence interpret their test results. While 76 percent of these individuals stated they felt in control, 67 percent reported experiencing confusion and 62 percent anxiety.

Physician Experience in Healthcare Institution Selection

According to the research, the most important criterion in choosing a healthcare institution was physician experience. Fifty-eight percent of participants stated they value physician experience, and 48 percent valued accurate diagnosis.
