Artificial Intelligence Safety Mechanism
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made statements to the press following prolonged talks with Chinese officials in New York. It was reported that the two sides discussed a dialogue mechanism that would enable them to warn each other regarding artificial intelligence incidents capable of impacting national security.
Bessent emphasized that increasing transparency between the world's two largest artificial intelligence powers is of great importance.
Summit Agenda and Expectations
The topic of artificial intelligence is expected to rank high on the agenda during Thursday's meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Experts state that due to the deep mistrust between the two countries, the likelihood of a comprehensive artificial intelligence agreement coming out of this summit is low.
Export Controls and China's Approach
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the artificial intelligence talks will not affect export controls targeting advanced chips and semiconductor equipment.
While Chinese officials did not make statements to the press as they left the meeting, the official text published by the Xinhua agency did not mention the US security proposal.
