China and Brazil 2026 Beef Trade Quota Filled

Brazil's 2026 beef quota for China has been filled, with an additional 55 percent tariff imposed on shipments exceeding the quota as of October 1.

The 1.1 million-ton quota set for 2026 in the beef trade between China and Brazil was completely filled as of September 29. Shipments exceeding the quota began facing an additional 55 percent customs duty starting October 1.

Fulfillment of the Quota and New Tax

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that beef imports from Brazil reached 100 percent of the annual quota on September 29. The quota of approximately 1 million 106 thousand tons granted to Brazil was filled on this date.

Implementation Schedule and Costs

According to China's rules, the additional tax comes into effect on the third day after the quota is filled. Accordingly, the new tariff on Brazilian beef began to be applied as of 00:00 on October 1.

Brazil's Market Share

Brazil ranks among China's most important beef suppliers. The largest portion of China's total import quota of 2.7 million tons set for 2026 has been allocated to Brazil.

Three-Year Protection Measure

Beijing introduced the country-based quota and additional tax system on January 1, 2026, in order to protect domestic producers. The program is planned to be implemented until the end of 2028.
