Criteria for Becoming a Province
Two basic conditions are sought for settlements that are on the agenda to be upgraded to provincial status. The first is that the district's population must be at least 100,000, and the second is that it must be located at least 30 kilometers away from the provincial center to which it is attached.
Other Factors Evaluated
In addition to the basic population and distance requirements, economic capacity, industrial and agricultural production, tourism potential, transportation infrastructure, and the characteristics of being a regional center are also among the issues taken into account in the evaluations.
Potential Candidate Districts
Alanya, Tarsus, Çorlu, İnegöl, Siverek, Manavgat, İskenderun, Konya Ereğli, Ünye, Ergani, Lüleburgaz, Nazilli, Cizre, Bandırma, Erciş, Zonguldak Ereğli, Edremit, Fethiye, Yüksekova, Midyat, Polatlı, Elbistan, Kahta, and Kozan are shown among the centers with the potential to become provinces.
Necessity of Legal Process
Although the 24 districts that meet the specified criteria are among the potential candidates, it is mandatory for an official legal regulation to be enacted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for these places to gain provincial status.
