Cooperation Agreement on Nuclear Energy Between Turkey and the US
A grant agreement of approximately $2 million has been implemented to examine the applicability of new-generation nuclear technologies in the country between the two countries.
A project-based grant agreement with a budget of approximately $2 million has been signed between Turkey and the US for new-generation nuclear technologies. Within the framework of the agreement, small modular reactors and fourth-generation reactor designs will be examined for compliance with Turkish conditions.
Signing of the Agreement
The foundation of an important energy cooperation was laid at the Türkevi in New York, where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly. A formal project-based agreement was signed between the Turkish Nuclear Energy Company and the US Trade and Development Agency. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar also accompanied the signing ceremony.

TÜNAŞ General Manager Necati Yamaç and USTDA Deputy Director Thomas Hardy signed the mutual agreement to formalize the joint project. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced their participation in the signing ceremony on his social media account and stated that new-generation technologies would be evaluated in detail.
Technologies to be Examined
Within the scope of the technical studies to be carried out, small modular reactor designs from four US companies and five different fourth-generation reactor designs will be discussed. The applicability of these designs in Turkey will be comprehensively investigated in terms of technical, economic, regulatory, and licensing aspects.
Budget and Financing Structure
The technical studies, which will have a budget of approximately $2 million and last for at least one year under the agreement, will be financed by the USTDA. Following the analyses, detailed technical reports will be prepared and submitted to the relevant institutions.
