A millions-of-years-old Gastropoda fossil unearthed during excavations in Ankara's Külhöyük is being prepared for display at the museum.
A 66-million-year-old Gastropoda fossil discovered during the Külhöyük excavations in Ankara's Gölbaşı district sheds light on the region's natural history and will be exhibited at the museum.
Historical Discovery in Külhöyük Excavations
An important find was made as part of the excavation work that resumed in 2021 at Külhöyük, a 5,000-year-old Hatti and Hittite city in Gölbaşı Oyaca, in cooperation with Ankara University and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
66-Million-Year-Old Gastropoda Fossil
The Gastropoda, or snail fossil, discovered in one of the rooms of the structure and dating back 66 million years, is considered to belong to the final stages of the Tethys Sea.
Excavation Head Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derya Yılmaz Tekin stated that she was very surprised to encounter such an old geological find in an archaeological layer.
Delivery to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
The fossil, which will be delivered to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations along with other archaeological artifacts at the end of the season, is expected to meet visitors after evaluations by experts at the museum.
