IV. Murat Opera Staged in İzmir with a New Interpretation
The İzmir State Opera and Ballet is preparing to bring the opera IV. Murat, directed by Haldun Özörten, to art lovers.
The İzmir State Opera and Ballet will present the opera IV. Murat, first staged in Istanbul in 1980, with a new interpretation by director Haldun Özörten on October 1 at the Bornova Culture and Art Center Necdet Aydın Stage.
Subject and Historical Background of the Opera
In the three-act opera with a libretto by Ahmet Turan Oflazoğlu, the accession to the throne at a young age of Murad IV, who reigned between 1623 and 1640, is depicted. The work addresses power struggles within the palace, the influence of his mother Kösem Sultan, and the ruler's effort to establish his own authority.
Cast and Distribution of Roles
In the production, which draws attention with its historical structure, the role of Sultan Murad IV is shared by Doğukan Özkan and Teyfik Rodos. In the role of the powerful character Kösem Sultan, Eylem Demirhan and Derya Kırcalı Gürlük will appear before the audience.
Stage Design and Visual Narrative
While Neslihan Gazal Erten undertook the costume design of the production, the set design was carried out by Özgür Usta. Through these designs, the emotional states of the characters and the dramatic structure are made visible via color, texture, and form.
Director's New Interpretive Approach
Director Haldun Özörten stated that in the new interpretation of the work, they brought Murad IV's human emotions and fears to the forefront rather than his victories. The pressure created by power, the relationship with the mother, and inner conflicts are conveyed to the stage.

The opera IV. Murat will be staged with the premiere to be held on October 1 at the Bornova Culture and Art Center Necdet Aydın Stage. The work will meet the audience once again in the 45th art season of the İzmir State Opera and Ballet.

The three-act opera, which is expected to attract great interest from art lovers, will be staged again for audiences following the premiere. The work can be viewed on October 3 and October 5 after its initial performance on October 1.
