Kars Castle Draws Attention with Its History of About 900 Years

As one of Kars's most important historical symbols, Kars Castle, whose history dates back to 1152, continues to attract the attention of domestic and foreign tourists with its nearly 900-year history.

History and Location

Located on a high hill in the north of the city, the castle stands out with both its historical structure and its commanding view of Kars. Having witnessed wars, destructions, and repairs for centuries, Kars Castle has managed to survive to the present day with its stone walls and bastions. Today, the castle draws attention as one of the most visited historical spots by domestic and foreign tourists in Kars.

Construction

The history of Kars Castle dates back to the Saltukids period. According to the inscription on the southern rampart walls, the castle was built in 1152 by vizier Firuz Akay upon the order of Saltukid Sultan Melik İzzeddin. In the resources of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the castle is included as an important defensive structure that was damaged many times due to various attacks and wars throughout history, and was restored in different periods.

Destructions and Repairs

Kars Castle was destroyed by Timur in 1386. The revival of the castle took place during the Ottoman period. The castle was rebuilt in 1579 by Lala Mustafa Paşa upon the order of Ottoman Sultan Murad III. Kars Castle was devastated again by Iranian Shah Abbas I in 1606, and underwent repairs in 1616 and 1636. The castle also suffered damage during the 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War and has survived to the present day through subsequent repairs.
