Representation of Women and Palestine-Themed Productions Discussed at the 83rd Venice Film Festival
The Venice Film Festival, one of the world's most established cinema gatherings, is making headlines as much for its opening film and awards as it is for the proportion of female directors and Palestine-focused productions.
The 83rd Venice Film Festival, the oldest cinema festival in the world, is keeping the pulse of the cinematic world with its rich content and famous guests, alongside industry debates and politically themed productions.
Festival Opening and Standout Productions
The 83rd Venice Film Festival, the oldest festival of the seventh art, has kicked off with famous guests, special awards, and controversial agenda items. The opening film of the festival was "Ink" directed by Danny Boyle. The film depicts the youth of Rupert Murdoch, played by Guy Pearce, and Murdoch's process of acquiring the daily newspaper The Sun.
Lifetime Achievement Awards Find Their Owners
George Clooney, who was deemed worthy of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival, met with members of the press prior to the ceremony and criticized US President Trump without naming him. The other master name deemed worthy of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival was 93-year-old Ellen Burstyn.
Representation of Female Directors in Competition Debated
Actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal is chairing the main competition jury. Although a female filmmaker is presiding over the main competition of the festival, the representation of female directors in the competition section has become a subject of debate. Among the 21 films competing for the Golden Lion, only one is directed by a woman: May el-Toukhy's film "Woman Unknown". One of the two directors of "Naza" is a woman, Rachel Szor.
Emphasis on Financing from the Jury President
Jury President Maggie Gyllenhaal stated at the press conference that this is a systemic problem, explaining the source of the issue as the greater difficulty women face in securing film financing. This statement resonated widely at the festival.
Star-Studded Parade and Closing Date
The festival, which will feature stars such as Robert Pattinson, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Pamela Anderson, Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich, Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, and Louis Garrel, will conclude with the awards ceremony on September 12.
Standout Palestine-Themed Films at the Festival
Three Palestine-themed films stand out at the festival. "Naza", directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor—one of the directors of the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land"—and focusing on Israel's massacre in Gaza, was added to the competition at the last minute as the only documentary competing for the Golden Lion. Directed by Ahmed Hassouna, "Al Mowaten Osama", and directed by Muayad Alayan, "Hiwar ma’ albahr", are among the other productions included in the festival's program.
