The Historic Mushaf-ı Şerif of the Husein Pasha Mosque in Montenegro Restored
The restoration and facsimile process of the Mushaf-ı Şerif of the Husein Pasha Mosque, dating back to the 14th century and preserved by Muslims in Montenegro, has been completed.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the restoration, digitization, and facsimile works of the 14th-century Mushaf-ı Şerif from the Husein Pasha Mosque, which Muslims in Montenegro have preserved for centuries, have been completed.
Restoration and Facsimile Process
In a statement on his social media account, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the facsimile of the historical Mushaf-ı Şerif was completed in line with the request of the Islamic Union of Montenegro and the instructions of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
History and Characteristics of the Work
Identified by experts from the Turkish Manuscripts Institution (TÜYEK) as a 14th-century Mamluk mushaf, the work was endowed in the second half of the 16th century by Husein Pasha of Pljevlja (Taşlıcalı Hüseyin Paşa) to the mosque bearing his name.
Described by Balkan expert Machiel Kiel as one of the finest examples of Islamic calligraphy and bookmaking in the Balkans, the Mushaf has been passed down from generation to generation despite wars and migrations.
To Be Returned to Montenegro
Restored by TÜYEK upon the instructions of President Erdoğan, the work was digitized by the Department of Manuscript Mushafs and prepared for printing, and its facsimile was produced under the coordination of the Istanbul Governorate.
The first copy was presented to President Erdoğan, and the Mushaf will be delivered back to Montenegro through the organization of the Islamic Union of Montenegro via the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB).
