First Pay Raise for Singapore Ministers in 15 Years

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that ministers' salaries will be increased for the first time in 15 years, stating that the government needs to update remuneration to attract talented individuals into politics.

New Salary Framework and Figures

Under the revised salary framework, the benchmark annual salary for an entry-level minister will rise from 1.1 million Singapore dollars to 1.8 million Singapore dollars.

The Prime Minister's benchmark salary will be raised from 2.2 million Singapore dollars to 3.6 million Singapore dollars.

Gradual Increase and Donation Decision

Ministers and other political officeholders will not transition immediately to the new salary benchmark; a one-off adjustment of up to 9 percent will be made starting October 15, based on performance and responsibilities.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that he will donate the entirety of his salary increase to charity over the next five years.

Justification for Political Salaries

The government views this system as necessary to attract talented individuals from the private sector and public service and to maintain clean governance.

It was stated that ministerial salaries had fallen behind comparable earnings in the private sector and public service.

Framework and Reference Points

The salary framework benchmarks against the median income of Singapore's top 1,000 highest-earning citizens, applying a 40 percent discount to reflect the nature of political service.

It was reported that the new salary arrangement will be reviewed every five years.
