1,263 Extreme Weather Events Occurred in the First Eight Months of 2026
According to the report published by the General Directorate of Meteorology, a total of 1,263 extreme weather events were recorded across the country in the first eight months of 2026.
The Early Climate Assessment report prepared by the General Directorate of Meteorology shared the extreme weather events, temperature, and precipitation data experienced in the first eight months of 2026 with the public.
Average Temperatures Above Normals
According to the published report, Turkey's average temperature for the first eight months of 2026 was recorded at 14.9 degrees. This temperature value was 0.4 degrees above the 1991-2020 normal.
Recorded as the 14th Warmest Year
As a result of the obtained climate data, 2026 took its place in the records as the 14th warmest year experienced across Turkey since 1971.
Increase Observed in Precipitation Amounts
In the first eight-month period of 2026, the total monthly precipitation generally hovered above normal, except for the month of June. The regional precipitation amount was 54 percent above normal.
Number of Extreme Events Drew Attention
While an average of 1,047 extreme weather events were seen in the last 10-year period, this number reached the level of 1,263 in just the first eight months of 2026.
Distribution Ratios of Events
Among the extreme events that occurred, heavy rain and floods ranked first with 33 percent, followed by storms with 20 percent, and hail with a rate of 17 percent.
Extreme Events by Years
Looking at the data from past years, the report stated that 1,011 extreme weather events were recorded in 2025, 1,257 in 2024, and 1,475 in 2023.
