As a result of a joint initiative by Akdeniz Electricity Distribution Corporation and the Coastal Protection Association in the Manavgat district of Antalya, more than 5,500 Caretta caretta hatchlings safely reached the waters of the Mediterranean.

Red LED Transformation on Beaches

In April, street lighting along an approximately 11-kilometer stretch of coastline in the Side and Sorgun beaches of Antalya's Manavgat district was completely renewed.

Hatchlings Prevented from Light Confusion

Thanks to replacing the street lamps with red LED lights, hatchlings emerging from their nests were prevented from heading towards bright yellow and white lights and remaining on land.

Thousands of Hatchlings Safely Reached the Sea

As a result of this eco-friendly application, more than 5,500 Caretta caretta hatchlings managed to reach the sea directly without any harm.

New Cooperation Protocol Signed

Following this significant success, officials from AEDAŞ and DEKAFOK signed an official protocol to ensure conservation efforts continue.

A Promising Step for Future Years

DEKAFOK President Seher Akyol reminded that only 1 out of every 1,000 hatchlings reaches adulthood, emphasizing that every individual saved is of vital importance.

With the newly signed protocol, it is aimed that this exemplary study will be continued in the coming years and inspire other coastal regions.
