Agricultural Production and Economic Contributions in Istanbul
Agricultural activities and production planning carried out across Istanbul continue to provide significant added value to the city's economy.
Istanbul Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Suat Parıldar announced that agricultural activities provide a strong contribution to the economy thanks to the city's more than 743 thousand decares of cultivated agricultural land and production planning.
Agricultural Lands and Districts
Although Istanbul is one of the world's largest metropolises, it continues its agricultural activities with its vast agricultural lands and production capacity. Fourteen percent of the city's geography consists of agricultural lands.
Silivri, Çatalca, Arnavutköy, Şile, Beykoz, Pendik, Sarıyer, and Büyükçekmece are among the main districts where active agricultural operations are carried out.
Yield Increase in Strategic Products
Six strategic products—wheat, barley, sunflower, canola, dry beans, and chickpeas—are evaluated within the scope of production planning in the city. This year, an increase of 20-25 percent in wheat, 25-30 percent in barley, and 30 percent in sunflower and canola is expected.
Farmer Support and Grants
More than 525 million liras in agricultural support payments were transferred to farmers in 2025, and it was reported that an increase was also made in the 2026 supports. With the aim of developing vegetable and fruit production, more than 2 million vegetable seedlings were distributed with a 75 percent grant support. Additionally, there are over 140 thousand food businesses throughout Istanbul.
