Billions of Dollars Saved Through Solar and Wind Energy Generation
Electricity generated from solar and wind in Turkey over the past decade has prevented billions of dollars in imported fossil fuel costs and millions of tons of carbon emissions.
Turkey's generation of 442.2 terawatt-hours of electricity from solar and wind between 2015 and 2025 has prevented billions of dollars in coal and natural gas imports.
Ten Years of Renewable Energy Generation
Turkey's capacity increase in solar and wind energy over the past decade has made a significant contribution to replacing fossil fuels in electricity generation. According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, a total of 442.2 terawatt-hours of electricity was generated from these sources during the 2015-2025 period.
Prevention of Coal and Natural Gas Imports
This generation prevented $21.5 billion in coal imports that would have occurred if the same amount of electricity had been produced using imported coal. It was calculated that if this generation had been met by natural gas-fired power plants, $43.3 billion in natural gas imports would have been required.
Major Reduction in Carbon Emissions
By substituting electricity generation from imported coal, approximately 354 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions were prevented. It was determined that if the same amount of generation had substituted natural gas-fired production, approximately 177 million tons of emissions would have been avoided.
2035 Target and Future Vision
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that they aim to increase renewable energy potential to 120,000 megawatts of installed capacity by 2035. Turkey continues to reduce foreign dependency and lower emissions by increasing its power in renewable energy.
