Canada Enforces New Tariffs on US Imports
In response to US customs duties, Canada is introducing tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent on billions of dollars worth of American imports.

Scope and Rates of Tariffs
Taking effect in the early hours of Tuesday, the tariffs range from 15 percent to 50 percent and cover 27.6 billion Canadian dollars worth of imports from the US.
These measures target sectors most affected by US tariffs, such as steel, dairy products, home appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
Rationale for Retaliatory Decision
The Canadian government stated that these countermeasures were taken as a result of the United States' decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on 27.6 billion dollars worth of Canadian goods, which went into effect on August 22.
The announcement also added that Canada's countermeasures would not apply to US goods that are in transit to Canada on the day they take effect.
Political Tension Between Leaders
While tension between Canada and the US has increased in recent weeks, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney urged the US administration to be serious as the trade dispute spills over into diplomatic tensions.
While US President Donald Trump and senior US officials have criticized the Canadian administration, Trump has also taken various symbolic steps targeting Canada.
Cultural and Linguistic Rights Debate
Carney stated last month that American negotiators viewed measures to protect the French language as an annoyance, but that for Quebec these are fundamental rights.
Quebec has long maintained laws aimed at protecting French and preserving its distinct cultural identity, which continues to be one of the points of contention in trade talks.
