Complaints over inflated discounts in the cosmetics sector are on the rise
Cosmetic stores misleading consumers by raising prices first and then showing them as discounted during sales periods.
While complaints are increasing that product prices are first increased and then shown as discounted during frequently encountered discount campaigns in the cosmetics market, experts state that this situation is a deceptive commercial practice.
Misleading Campaign Methods
Complaints that frequently repeated discount campaigns in cosmetic stores are implemented to mislead consumers have recorded an increase. Despite the measures and decisions taken by the Ministry of Trade, it is observed that price hikes are made on some products.
Price Increases and Examinations
Examinations revealed that a lipstick with a normal retail price ranging between 400 and 500 Turkish Liras was first raised to 900 Turkish Liras and then sold for 449 Turkish Liras with a discount tag. Similarly, it was determined that the price of a liquid eyeshadow, which was 132 Turkish Liras on September 1, was raised to 267 Turkish Liras and then dropped to 133 Turkish Liras with a 50 percent discount.
Legal Status and Warnings
Yunus Emre Bitmez, a Board Member of the Consumer Union Federation, stated that these practices are considered deceptive commercial practices within the framework of the Law on the Protection of Consumers No. 6502 and the Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices.
