The Netherlandsche Bank is continuing its operation to move a significant portion of its gold reserves located in North America to London as part of global uncertainties and crisis preparedness.

Transfer Process of Reserves

Between March and August, approximately 86 metric tons of gold were transported to London from the cities of New York and Ottawa.

With this relocation move, the capital of the United Kingdom has become the hub hosting the largest share of the Netherlands' total gold reserves.

Crisis Management and Resilience

De Nederlandsche Bank Executive Board member Olaf Sleijpen stated that they have increased the tradeability and liquidity of the gold through the process of repositioning the reserves.

Sleijpen emphasized that they hope they will not have to use these reserves, but that they must strengthen their resilience and level of preparedness for crises.

Advantages of the London Market

Aimed at increasing crisis management capacity against rising geopolitical uncertainties, the bank aims with the London move for reserves to be transferred much faster and more effectively in the event of a potential crisis.

In addition, the rapid use of reserves as collateral played an important role in this strategic choice.

Bank of England Vaults

The Bank of England vaults, where Dutch reserves are moved, house very large quantities of gold bullion on behalf of other monetary institutions and commercial providers.

The total value of the assets kept in these vaults exceeds 780 billion dollars.
