Economic Confidence in Eurozone and EU Rises in August, Exceeding Expectations
In August, the economic confidence indicator reached 98.2 points in the EU and 98.4 points in the Eurozone, continuing its upward trend for the last four months.
According to August data released by the European Commission, the economic sentiment indicator increased in both the EU as a whole and the Eurozone, coming in above market expectations.
Increase Above Expectations
According to the results of the European Commission's business and consumer survey for August, the economic sentiment indicator in the EU increased by 1 point on a monthly basis to reach 98.2 points. In the Eurozone, the indicator rose by 1.3 points during the same period to reach the 98.4 point level.
In the markets, the expectation for the Eurozone in August was projected at 97.5 points. With the announced data of 98.4 points, the economic sentiment indicator surpassed expectations. Additionally, the Eurozone's data for July was revised from 96.9 points to 97.1 points.
Sectoral Developments and Consumer Confidence
This upward movement in the economic sentiment indicator was driven by increased confidence in the industry, services, and retail trade sectors. In contrast, confidence levels in the construction sector and among consumers remained largely stable.
Looking at consumer confidence indicators, a limited improvement was recorded in August, moving from minus 15.9 to minus 15.5 in the Eurozone, and from minus 15.1 to minus 15 in the EU as a whole. Indicators in both the EU and the Eurozone have been rising for the last four months, approaching the long-term average of 100 points.
