Within the scope of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be hosted by Türkiye in Antalya, the goal of accelerating electrification on a global scale is being discussed.

Details of the Summit to Take Place in Antalya

The 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be hosted by Türkiye in Antalya between November 9-20, will host an important process where the country carries its goal of accelerating electrification on a global scale to the COP agenda.

Key Targets Set for 2035

The strategic target announced by the COP31 Presidency envisions increasing the share of electricity in final energy consumption, which is currently slightly above 20 percent, to 35 percent by 2035.

In line with this target, it is aimed to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean electricity in the transport, buildings, and industrial sectors, increase renewable energy production, and strengthen grid infrastructure.

Expert Evaluations on Energy Transition

SHURA Energy Transition Center Director Alkım Bağ evaluated the 35 percent target brought to the agenda by Türkiye within the scope of the COP31 Presidency and the critical role of electrification in the energy transition.

Defining electrification as the process of substituting fossil fuels with clean electricity, Bağ stated that these rates should reach 35 percent by 2035 and at least 50 percent by 2050.

Renewable Energy Potential and Infrastructure

Recalling that Türkiye has a total installed capacity target of 120 gigawatts specifically in wind and solar energy by 2035, experts emphasize that this situation creates a solid foundation for electrification.

In addition, it is stated that COP31 can be used as an important lever to accelerate the country's own energy transition.
