Europe must build own AI or risk getting cut off by US or China, says ECB’s Lagarde

Speaking in Vienna, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that Europe must develop its own artificial intelligence technology and build data centers to prevent the risk of being left behind by the US or China.

The Need for Artificial Intelligence and Data Centers

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde emphasized that the continent must develop its own artificial intelligence technology and local data centers to eliminate the threat of being sidelined by the US or China. Lagarde stated that if Europe invests in its own technology, this threat will lose its impact.

Global Artificial Intelligence Competition

Noting in her speech in Vienna that artificial intelligence production is concentrated in other regions, Lagarde pointed out that last year the US produced 59 and China 35 notable models, while France and the UK each produced one. She also noted that the US holds 75 percent of global artificial intelligence processing capacity, whereas Europe's share remains at only 5 percent.

Difficult Choices and Economic Impact

Lagarde stated that Europe faces the risk of either missing out on growth by avoiding the adoption of the technology due to an inability to protect its data, or adopting it quickly and becoming heavily dependent, thereby losing the freedom to organize its economy according to its own values.

Widespread Economic Consequences

Stating that cutting off access to artificial intelligence or changing its terms would create immediate and widespread economic effects, Lagarde said that within a few years this situation would impact every sector from border controls and tax audits to train schedules and bank payments.

Productivity Growth and Financial Risks

Stating that the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence could increase productivity levels by up to 4 percent within a decade, Lagarde added that Europe currently has very little data center capacity to meet demand and that this deficit will grow exponentially.
