Diplomatic Efforts

The latest diplomatic efforts came after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that U.S. officials had very good discussions with Iranian representatives in New York, raising hopes for a new diplomatic breakthrough. Trump noted that the three-hour meeting, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, was very productive and that another meeting is planned for the near future. Iran, however, has not yet commented on the meeting or disclosed who participated.

Middle East Energy Flow

While the recovery in energy flow from the Middle East is considered a welcome development for Europe, it was noted that otherwise, the region could have entered into a fiercer competition for liquefied natural gas supplies, which would have driven prices higher ahead of the cold months.

Inventory Status and Fitch Statement

Currently, the region's gas inventories have a fill rate of just over 70%, while the seasonal average stands at 86%. Fitch Ratings stated that although the fill rate of EU gas storage facilities is below the seasonal averages of the past four years, it is sufficient to prevent supply disruptions during the winter months.

Market Data

Europe's benchmark for gas, the Netherlands' front-month futures contracts, fell 1% to 72.59 euros per megawatt-hour in Amsterdam at 08:38.
