European Union Grants 114.7 Million Euros in Emergency Migration Support to Spain
The Brussels administration has decided to provide both financial resources and operational expert support to Spain following the intense irregular crossings at the Ceuta border.
The European Commission has prepared an emergency aid package of 114.7 million euros for Spain following the mass irregular crossings that occurred at the Ceuta border at the end of July. This support will be used to enhance border security and strengthen operational capacity in the region.
Financial and Operational Support
In the statement made by the EU Commission, it was stated that the 114.7 million euro resource provided will be used for border surveillance, infrastructure improvements, and the procurement of new equipment.
In addition to financial support, Frontex, Europol, and the European Union Agency for Asylum responded to Spain's request for operational support and became involved in the operations in the region.
Developments at the Ceuta Border
At the end of July, approximately 70,000 irregular migrants attempted to swim from Morocco to Ceuta, Spain's territory in North Africa.
While it was confirmed that 88 irregular migrants lost their lives during the incidents, the Spanish government deployed armed forces to ensure security in the region.
