How Diesel Prices Exceeding 100 Lira Affect the Economy and Sectors
With diesel prices exceeding one hundred lira per liter, costs in sectors such as agriculture and transportation are soaring, while the repercussions on the economy and the retail world are being evaluated.
As the price of a liter of diesel in Turkey has risen above one hundred lira in many cities, the cost of a 50-liter tank has reached 5,000 lira, a situation that has begun to affect economic balances.
Current Fuel Prices
Across Turkey, the price per liter of diesel surpassed the 100 lira threshold in many cities following the price hike on September 17.
As of September 18, diesel reached 100.33 TL in Istanbul, while it exceeded 101 TL in Ankara and Izmir.
Tank Cost and Minimum Wage
Filling a standard 50-liter vehicle tank has reached a high cost of 5,000 lira.
This figure corresponds to approximately 18 percent of the 2026 net minimum wage.
Pressure on the Agricultural Sector
Heavy diesel consumption in tractor usage, irrigation pumps, and harvest processes is multiplying farmers' input costs.
Hasan Murat Kapıkıran, President of the TMMOB Chamber of Agricultural Engineers, emphasizes that current diesel subsidies remain insufficient and that producers are entering a debt spiral.
Government's Sliding Scale Policy
Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek announced that the sliding scale (eşel mobil) system for diesel will continue partially until the end of the year.
Minister Şimşek publicly stated that this practice will be completely terminated as of 2027.
Retail and Market Shelves
It is stated that fuel price hikes are not immediately reflected on market shelves at the highest rates.
