Kyrgyzstan Hosts SCO Summit Amid Global Geopolitical Shifts
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit gathered in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, highlighting non-Western-centric pursuits of multilateral cooperation.
Kyrgyzstan has brought world leaders together in Bishkek by hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where global tensions and regional trade debates are being addressed.
Leaders Attending the Summit
At the roundtable meeting held in Bishkek, Russia, China, India, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey—represented under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus framework—as well as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, were in attendance.
These countries, situated at the center of the world's largest geopolitical tensions, came together to pursue their interests outside a Western-centric framework, even if they do not agree on every issue.
Emphasis on a Multipolar World
In his speech at the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that over the twenty-five years since its inception, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has transformed into one of the most independent and influential centers of the rising multipolar world.
Putin pointed out that the organization, which set off in 2001 with six founding members, has today become the world's largest regional association, emphasizing that Moscow views this situation as proof of a changing world.
Kyrgyzstan's Balancing Act
As a small, landlocked, mountainous country with Russia to its north and bordering China, Kyrgyzstan has to maintain a delicate balance among its giant neighbors.
As Europe and the United States focus more on Central Asia, Shairbek Dzhuraev, head of the Crossroads Central Asia think tank, noted that the timing of the summit is particularly critical.
Iran's Diplomatic and Economic Messages
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian used the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit to address the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the diplomatic situation regarding US sanctions.
Pezeshkian explicitly stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran would respond immediately if the United States returned to its commitments under the memorandum in question.
Regional Economic Connections
For the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Iran is not only a diplomatic matter but also has an economic dimension, as the Washington administration has renewed sanctions against Tehran.
The expansion of US threats of penalties against those trading with Iran carries great significance for Central Asian countries, whose economies are intertwined with Russia and connected to Chinese trade networks.
