According to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, new car sales in member states increased by 4.5 percent in August compared to the same month of the previous year, totaling 708,211 units.
In the eight-month period between January and August, total sales in the European Union rose by 5.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching a level of 7,546,397 units.
Distribution by Fuel Types
Of the new cars sold in August, 33.2 percent were hybrids, 27.7 percent electric, 18.9 percent gasoline, 11.1 percent plug-in hybrids, 6.4 percent diesel, and 2.7 percent other fuel types.
Electric car sales showed a significant increase of 62.7 percent year-on-year in August, reaching 196,486 units, and the share of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles in total sales stood at 72 percent.
Car Market by Countries
New car sales in August increased by 2.6 percent in Germany, 3.2 percent in Italy, 7.4 percent in France, and 11.8 percent in Spain compared to the same month of the previous year.
Meanwhile, in Turkey, which ranks among Europe's top six markets, car sales were reported to have decreased by 25.16 percent during the same month.
Top Sellers by Group
According to automotive manufacturers' data, the Volkswagen Group achieved the highest number of new car sales across the European Union in August with 183,617 vehicles.
The Stellantis Group, which houses brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen, and Opel, ranked second with 99,145 sales, while the Renault Group took third place with 66,456 new cars.
