NextGenCOP30.5 Climate Summit and Youth Diplomacy Simulation Begins
200 delegates, who will experience the UN climate diplomacy process, are coming together to draft a joint climate agreement.
Hosted by Turkey and held for the first time, the NextGenCOP30.5 Climate Summit and Youth Diplomacy Simulation Program is being brought to life on Democracy and Freedom Island.
Location and Date of the Summit
Prepared in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Cemre Foundation, and Istanbul Technical University, the program is taking place on Democracy and Freedom Island, neighboring Istanbul, from August 27 to September 1, 2026.
Participant Profile and Opening Ceremony
While a total of 200 delegates are participating in the organization, COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum will be the person to perform the official opening on August 28.
Negotiation Topics and Blocs
Within the scope of the program, 6 different negotiation blocs will exchange views on 3 designated main negotiation topics and draft a joint climate agreement.
Stages of Climate Diplomacy
Participants will vote on the draft text they will prepare, inspired by the United Nations' climate diplomacy process, and will have the opportunity to experience the adoption process firsthand.
Main Areas to be Discussed
The comprehensive negotiations to be held will primarily shape around the headings of mitigation, climate finance, and adaptation, shedding light on future policies.
