Poway city council members unanimously approved the bill banning third-party artificial intelligence companies from building independent data centers. The decision was made to protect water and energy resources.
Land and Employment Priority
Supported by Mayor Steve Vaus and Councilmember Michelle Edmondson, the regulation aims to allocate existing lands to sectors that generate employment, such as industry and manufacturing.
Targeting Use, Not Technology
City officials emphasized that the decision is not anti-technology, but entirely an environmental and land-use measure. It was stated that businesses in the city can use whatever technology they wish.
City Council Debates
Councilmember Dave Grosch stated that a large data center could occupy land that could otherwise host multiple small-scale employers, noting that the area should not turn into a data warehouse.
Future Calendar and Final Decision
Although Deputy Mayor Jenny Maeda proposed a five-year moratorium, this suggestion did not gain support. The final approval of the bill is scheduled for October 6.
