Real Sector's Net Foreign Exchange Position Deficit Hit a Record High in July 2026

According to data released by the Central Bank, the foreign exchange deficit of companies outside the financial sector recorded a significant increase in July.

The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey published the statistics on foreign exchange assets and liabilities of companies outside the financial sector for July 2026. According to the released data, the real sector's net foreign exchange position deficit reached a historical record level of $210 billion 802 million.

Increase in Assets and Liabilities

In the July 2026 period, compared to the previous month, company assets increased by $2 billion 279 million, while liabilities recorded an increase of $7 billion 306 million. As a result of these developments, the net foreign exchange position deficit rose by $5 billion 027 million compared to June.

Distribution of Asset Items

Examining the asset distribution for the July 2026 period, export receivables increased by $2 billion 175 million, domestic bank deposits by $1 billion 74 million, and direct capital investments abroad by $607 million. In contrast, derivative assets and securities decreased by $1 billion 547 million and $29 million, respectively.

Change in Liability Items

On the liability side, compared to the previous month, derivative liabilities increased by $3 billion 472 million, and cash loans obtained from domestic sources increased by $2 billion 80 million. Import debts recorded an increase of $1 billion 147 million, and cash loans obtained from abroad increased by $607 million.

Maturity Structure of Loans

Looking at the maturity structure of liabilities, short-term and long-term loans obtained from domestic sources in July increased by $220 million and $1 billion 861 million, respectively. Short-term and long-term loans obtained from abroad increased by $807 million and $947 million, respectively.

Short-Term Net Foreign Exchange Position

In the July 2026 period, short-term assets amounted to $151 billion 772 million, and short-term liabilities stood at $147 billion 397 million. The short-term net foreign exchange position decreased by $2 billion 168 million compared to the previous month, recorded at $4 billion 374 million. The share of short-term liabilities in total liabilities stands at 37 percent.
