Steps towards economy and security-focused cooperation between the European Union and Canada

The European Union and Canada are making comprehensive preparations to deepen their relations in the fields of economy, security, critical raw materials, and digital trade. The parties are discussing integration levels similar to the Swiss and Norwegian models.

Searches for a New Partnership

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that his country does not aim to become an EU member but is preparing for talks to establish a new and deeper partnership with the Union. Carney is expected to address the European Parliament General Assembly in Strasbourg this week.

Critical Raw Materials and Trade

Possessing rich reserves of copper, nickel, lithium, and cobalt, Canada stands as a key supplier for the EU with its facilities to process these raw materials. While completing the approval process of CETA, the parties aim to finalize the Digital Trade Agreement by the end of the year.

Defense and Security Cooperation

Defense, security, and the Arctic region are among the core areas where relations are planned to be strengthened. Canada has also gained access to the EU's €150 billion European Security Action defense financing program.
