Turkey ranked sixth in the European automobile market
While automobile sales across Europe increased in the January-August period, the Turkish market experienced a contraction and lagged behind on the list.
While the European automobile market recorded growth in the first eight months of 2026, Turkey became the continent's sixth largest automobile market with sales of 564,241 units, though its sales contracted by 13.78 percent.
General Growth in the European Automobile Market
Despite high energy prices and geopolitical uncertainties, the European automobile market continued to grow in the first eight months of 2026. New automobile sales across Europe increased by 5.8 percent in the January-August period compared to the same period of last year, reaching 9,192,528 units.
Turkey's Sales Volume and Market Status
Following Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and Spain, Turkey ranked sixth on the list with 564,241 units sold. Although Turkey holds a significant position in sales volume, it contracted its market by 13.78 percent compared to the same period of last year and became the country with the largest decline.
Rapid Transformation in the Electric Vehicle Market
Across Europe, sales of fully electric automobiles increased by 38.8 percent in the January-August period to reach 2,133,364 units. Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Denmark stood out among the leading countries in this field.
Turkey's Electric Vehicle Performance
Turkey became Europe's sixth largest fully electric automobile market with sales of 105,255 fully electric vehicles. However, just like in the total market, Turkey declined by 12 percent in electric vehicles, contrary to the growth trend in Europe.
