US and Chinese Delegations Meet in New York for Economic and Trade Talks
Ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's planned visit to the US, delegations from both countries are starting consultations in New York to address economic and trade issues.
US and Chinese delegations are meeting in New York to discuss economic and trade matters ahead of President Xi Jinping's potential visit to the US. The talks will put key commercial issues between the two nations on the table.
Dates and Scope of the Talks
According to a statement from China's Ministry of Commerce, the Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng is visiting the US from September 19-23 to hold economic and trade talks.
It was noted that the parties will conduct detailed consultations on economic and trade issues of mutual concern, in line with the consensus previously reached by the leaders of the two countries.
Main Topics to Be Addressed
US government sources had previously stated that artificial intelligence, trade, rare earth elements, and various other economic issues would be discussed at the meetings in New York.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who will lead the US delegation in the talks, had stated that he is open to discussing the shared risks of artificial intelligence with the Chinese side.
High-Level Contacts and Leaders' Summit
These talks serve as preparation for Chinese President Xi Jinping's critical visit expected to the US next week.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his US counterpart Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation on September 17 to discuss high-level contacts between the two countries.
While US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Chinese leader Xi in Washington on September 24, the Chinese side has not yet officially confirmed this visit.
