Prepared by the Ministry of Health, the new draft tobacco control bill is being prepared for submission to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) in October and envisions a series of sweeping bans to reduce tobacco use.

Ban Coming for Slim Cigarettes

With the comprehensive draft bill prepared, it is aimed to remove slim cigarettes, which have become widespread among women and youth, from the market.

This regulation aims to make access to tobacco products more difficult and reduce usage rates.

Lifelong Ban for New Generations

According to the application, which is one of the most striking clauses of the draft, tobacco products will be banned for life for individuals born after January 1, 2015.

This step aims to completely protect future generations from tobacco addiction.

Digital Verification and Restrictions

In order to prevent minors from accessing tobacco products, digital verification systems using ID and credit cards will be put into effect at sales points.

Additionally, smoking will be ended in the outdoor areas of restaurants, and special areas will be established in parks and public buildings.

2040 Target and Public Support

With these gradual restrictions, Turkey aims to completely end the production and sale of tobacco products nationwide starting from the year 2040.

A field research conducted by Yeşilay revealed that 90 percent of citizens support the newly prepared bill.
