The Basra Office of the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights has requested the launch of an urgent cleaning and disinfection campaign to combat the rise in skin and respiratory diseases at the Basra Central Prison, which is housing inmates far beyond its capacity.

Five Times the Capacity

The overcrowding problem at Basra Central Prison has reached critical levels that directly threaten the health of the inmates. According to assessments, the prison is housing five times its normal capacity.

Rise in Skin and Respiratory Diseases

The overcrowded environment and inadequate hygiene conditions have led to the rapid spread of health problems among inmates. A significant increase in skin allergies and respiratory diseases has been reported.

Call for Urgent Disinfection Campaign

The Basra Office of the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights has appealed to the local government to issue instructions to the Provincial Health Directorate. They have requested the implementation of a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection campaign covering all sections of the prison.

Inclusion of Security Agency Prisons

The official statement emphasized that the scope of the requested cleaning campaign should be expanded. It was requested that prisons under the Ministry of Interior and detention centers of the anti-narcotics and crime departments also be included in this initiative.
