Ministry of Health Statement on West Nile Virus: Detected in Three Cases
In a statement by the Ministry of Health, it was stated that the West Nile Virus was observed in a total of 3 people in the country, the treatment of 2 patients is ongoing, and they are not in life-threatening condition.
The Ministry of Health announced that the West Nile Virus has been detected in 3 people across Turkey. It was reported that two of the patients are under treatment in the hospital and are not in life-threatening condition, while one person is showing no symptoms.
General Status of the Cases
In the official statement made by the Ministry of Health, it was reported that the West Nile Virus was detected as a result of laboratory tests in 2 patients who applied with upper respiratory tract infection complaints. It was noted that the general condition of these individuals, whose treatment in the hospital continues, is improving and they have no life-threatening danger.
It was stated that another citizen with no clinical complaints tested positive for the virus during screenings performed during routine blood checks, and this person is also being closely monitored.
Transmission Routes and Symptoms
It was recalled that West Nile Fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of Culex mosquitoes. It was emphasized that the virus has no direct human-to-human transmission risk, and humans are biologically considered dead-end hosts.
It was conveyed that while approximately eighty percent of cases show no symptoms, flu-like conditions such as high fever, headache, and fatigue can develop in some individuals.
Methods of Protection
It was stated that there is no specific vaccine or antiviral drug against the disease, and therefore the primary method of protection is to cut off contact with mosquitoes. The Ministry recommended the use of window screens in living spaces and draining stagnant waters.
