Negative Health Effects of Energy Drinks
Experts state that the high caffeine and sugar components found in energy drinks threaten brain vessel and liver health.
Pediatric Endocrinology Specialist Prof. Dr. Selim Kurtoğlu warned that substances such as high caffeine, sugar, citric acid, and ginseng contained in energy drinks can lead to serious health problems such as constriction in brain vessels, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, and palpitations.
Caffeine Toxicity and Brain Vessels
The high proportion of caffeine found in energy drinks can lead to constrictions in brain vessels. Experts state that this condition manifests itself with symptoms such as hand tremors, restlessness, insomnia, and palpitations.
Exceeding the daily caffeine limit during adolescence increases the risk of caffeine toxicity, paving the way for problems such as a depressive mood and hyperactivity in young people.
Sugar Consumption and Type 2 Diabetes Risk
Excessive consumption of starch sugars such as fructose and sucrose contained in the ingredients, combined with inactivity and obesity, triggers the process leading to type 2 diabetes.
The fact that fructose directly causes fatty liver lays the foundations for actual type 2 diabetes starting from adolescence in the long run.
Citric Acid and Other Harmful Components
Citric acid, known as lemon acid, creates an unsuitable environment inside the mouth, causing tooth decay and increasing stomach reflux.
It has been clinically observed that substances such as ginseng and guarana, like caffeine, cause rhythm disorders, high blood pressure, and constriction in brain vessels.
Warnings to Parents and Families
Experts underline that energy drinks should not become a habit in children from an early age.
It is of great importance for families to pay attention to healthy nutrition, keep children away from such harmful beverages, and ensure a balanced growth period supported by daily sports activities.
