The opening ceremony held at the university's Uzundere Campus began with a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem.
Evaluations by Governor Süleyman Elban
Governor Süleyman Elban stated that universities make significant contributions to the cultural structure and commercial life of the region where they are located.
Elban expressed that their greatest expectation is for the campus to become operational with all desired buildings and to contribute to the economic and cultural life of the region.
Urbanization Emphasis by Mahmut Atilla Kaya
AK Party Izmir Deputy Mahmut Atilla Kaya noted that the university will make an important contribution to the Karabağlar district in terms of urbanization.
Kaya stated that Izmir has a tremendous potential and that the most needed element for this city is common sense.
Statements from Rector Selim Karahasanoğlu
Rector Prof. Dr. Selim Karahasanoğlu emphasized that the newly opened building is of great importance as it is the first permanent reinforced concrete structure on the campus.
Conveying that the university continues its educational activities with 10 faculties and approximately 13,000 students, Karahasanoğlu said that the existing physical infrastructure was insufficient.
Future Period Projects and Goals
Rector Karahasanoğlu announced that the foundations of two more classroom blocks of 4,000 and 8,000 square meters will be laid at the Uzundere Campus within the year 2026.
The long-term goals of the campus include a medical school hospital, library, mosque, bazaar, and theater building.
Time Capsule Sealed
Following the ribbon-cutting by protocol members, the new health building, which will serve students of medicine, health sciences, and the vocational school, was toured.
Additionally, a time capsule prepared for the 10th anniversary of Izmir Democracy University, where participants left notes, was sealed to be opened on September 7, 2036.
